The idea

Distortion started as a question about gravity rather than lighting: what does a form look like if it's been warped by something massive and unseen?

Layered steel discs, plasma-cut and offset slightly from the last, stand in for the way light curves around a black hole's event horizon — built up rather than smoothed over.

Making it

Each layer is plasma-cut aluminium rivetted to welded steel, finished in matte black to keep the focus on silhouette and shadow rather than surface shine.

The layering does double duty, structurally and visually — it's what lets the piece cast the distorted shadow pattern it's named for.
